Just nine months after dropping his debut album; The Chief, Jidenna blesses his fans with a new Extended Playlist he calls ‘Boomerang’.
The six track project is somewhat an extension of his debut album as it maintains the same retro melodies, swanky grooves and entire soundscape that made up The Chiefalbum. The Boomerang EP houses four new original songs and two remixes from his debut album.
The EP was off to a tasteful start with ‘Decibels’. The song begins with a dramatic voice message from a disgruntled girlfriend followed by Jidenna’s light weighted verses as he spat egoistically on the jivey instrumental. He raps; ‘Smoke loud, move loud, too proud / They tell her pipe it down, but she make decibels.’
The tape took a more groovy route on the lead single ‘Boomerang’. Jidenna is an absolute lover boy on this song as he sings his heart out to his love interest on the Diplo produced Dancehall beat. The lines between singing and rapping were totally blurred on the Boomerang EP as Jidenna experimented with his vocals almost throughout the project.
Nigerian pop queen Tiwa Savage was enlisted on ‘Spy Candy’ which saw them go on about insecurities and distrust in relationships. Savage kept things abreast with her sultry vocals while Jidenna alternated between rapping and singing. Spy Candy shares a lot of sonic similarities with his 2015 hit ‘Classic Man’ as it exudes the same 90’s vibe.
Upon announcing the release of the Boomerang, the most anticipated track was definitely ‘Bambi Too’ which is a refix of his classic hit ‘Bambi’ off The Chief album. With vocal contributions from Maleek Berry, Quavo and Sarkodie, one had very high expectations for the record. But well… Mr Berry did his usual good, Quavo came through with his cranky verse while Sarkodie rapped inconsistently in and out of loop. It wasn’t a disaster but it equally had no twist or anything that matched our expectations.
The stand out track on the EP is the remix of ‘Little Bit More’. Burna Boy is known to never do wrong, his infectious energy and unmatched vocals transformed the already successful song into a fire tune as he embellished it with some Nigerian slangs and sampled a line from Timaya’s 2008 classic ‘Dem Mama Remix’.
‘Out of Body’ featuring Wale and Dot Cromwell closes out the project with a bang as Wale took the song to the hip-hop route dispensing heavy flows
There isn’t so much to the Boomerang EP especially for someone who had listened to The Chief album. It is simply a moderate extension of the former and a show off of Jidenna’s ties with his African colleagues.
