Policemen Reportedly Kill SARS Operative In Anambra State



A Special Anti-Robbery Squad member in Anambra state has reportedly lost his life after he was shot by policemen.

Operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Awkuzu, Anambra state were thrown into a mourning mood, following the shooting and killing of their operatives by some policemen who mistook him for an armed robber, a report by The Nigerian Pilot has revealed.
 
It was gathered that the incident occured at Alor community in Idemili South Local Government Area of the state, home town of the incumbent Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige.
 
The deceased SARS operative whose identity was yet to be ascertained was said to have gone to accompany one of his colleagues to somebody’s residence for an arrest at about 4.30 a.m.
 
The source stated that the SARS operatives were just handcuffing their suspect when an eye witness who did not know that they were policemen or SARS operatives alerted some nearby policemen attached to some personalities within the neighborhood, informing them that some armed robbers/kidnappers were trying to abduct someone.
 
It was gathered that as soon as the policemen arrived the scene and saw the SARS operatives, they allegedly opened fire at once and gunned down the deceased operative, before his colleague identified themselves as SARS operative on special duty.
 
The Officer-In-charge of SARS at Awkuzu, Sunday Okpe, simply told newsmen on phone yesterday that the deceased operative was one of his subordinates.
 
The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Haruna Mohammed, also told newsmen on phone that he was not yet aware of the incident, adding that he would make some inquiries.
 
An insider in the Police Command, who begged not to be mentioned, said that the offending policemen were already facing orderly room trial.
