Shocking Story Of Man Who Turned A Church Premises To Kidnappers' Den In Delta

The police source informed that the suspects, during interrogation, also said they abducted two other staff of the bank and carried out several high-profile kidnap operations in the state.

For as many as two long years, the many residents of Agbarho community in Ughelli North area of Delta State had been thanking God for the life of a member of the community who they all saw as a hugely successful businessman.

The man, Victor Dominic Ovo, owns an exotic building in the community. And he was generous enough to donate a part of the building to a pastor, who has been using the space as a fellowship centre.

But there was something the pastor and other members of the community did not know. The well-built bungalow believed to be the residential apartment of this ‘successful businessman’ was nothing but a hideout where several kidnap victims were kept.

Members of the church and indeed, the community got the shock of their lives recently when detectives attached to the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), who had arrested Victor Dominic Ovo at a different location, stormed the compound. Several persons who gathered for their fellowship took to their heels when they saw Dominic in chains. He led the operatives to the main house where different arms and valuables believed to belong to previous victims were found.

A reliable police source informed the reporter that Dominic is a leading member of a notorious kidnap gang whose members have been smartly picking high profile persons in the state. He and three others identified as Owesi Okpaka, Lawrence Kevwe Egagah, Alex Okoun and Usobotie Sylvester were nabbed when of one their victims summoned courage and petitioned the Inspector General of Police.

The victim, identified as Daniel, a staff of Zenith Bank, Urhobo College Branch, Warri said that he was abducted on October 5, 2020 about 8am by heavily armed men who took him to a house at Agbarho community.

The police source informed that the suspects, during interrogation, also said they abducted two other staff of the bank and carried out several high-profile kidnap operations in the state. The abduction of the bank workers was made possible, it was gathered, through the information provided by Owesi Okpaka, who was a staff of the bank as at the time of the operation. They were nabbed with 14 rounds of live G3 ammunitions, AK-47 rifles and several other weapons. They also led the operatives to another house in the neighbourhood used as a hideout, and which belongs to Lawrence Kevwe Egagah.

Daniel in kidnappers’ den

Recounting his ordeal, Daniel said that he was on his way to work when he was trailed and abducted by heavily armed men.

Said he: “On October 5, 2020 about 8am, I was abducted by a gang of kidnappers. There were four of them in a Mercedes Benz Car; I’m not too sure of the colour of the vehicle. Another car that I had also seen opposite my street followed and blocked me from the rear. I was taken into the Mercedes Benz and we went to a location suspected to be Agbarho community, owing to the duration and number of turns we made before I was dropped. I was kept in a bungalow and made to stay in the passage of the building. The building had four rooms, two toilets, a kitchen and I could hear women fetching water in a well. I was blindfolded, chained in both hands and legs. During the negotiation, they would take me and drive around while I was allowed to talk to my family. I was there for five days and my family paid N15 million before I was released on October 10 2020.”

Why I used church building as hideout for kidnap victims

Dominic, a native of Oghara in Sapelle Local Government Area of Delta State claimed that he was the one who handled the negotiation of ransom.

“I dropped out of university and went into wood business and illegal oil bunkering. I also have a poultry farm by the side so that if anyone queries my source of income, I will show them my farm.

“Once you are into anything illegal, you will naturally meet bad friends. This was how I met the others and we formed a five-man gang. I own exotic cars, which we normally used for our kidnap operations.

“The Zenith Bank staff kidnap was arranged by Okpaka who was a staff of the bank. The first person paid us N15million in dollars as ordered by us. The second and third victim also paid the same sum. Okpaka chose the rich ones among them and just as he predicted, they paid good money and my total share from the three victims was about 5million.”

Dominic said his house was used to camp the victims because of the location. “I am seen as a big boy in my area and my house is massive. I gave out the front part to a pastor who knows nothing about my illegal business. People respect me because of that, this is why it is very easy to keep victims there even while people come to the compound to fellowship.

“There was a time the police tracked a number to my area. They did not enter my compound because people were there praising God. This is the reason why whenever we are calling for negotiation with victim’s number, we will move the person to another location before he or she will be allowed to talk to their family.

Apart from kidnapping, I have participated in high profile organised robberies in Ondo state. I did that only three times in 2020.”

Greed drove me into crime

A native of Ubogo Community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, Okpaka told the police that he was the one who suggested that the three staff of Zenith bank should be abducted.  “I am not legally married but I have a woman –  Loveth Owhayovwe – who gave birth to a child for me.  I studied Business Administration at Oghara Polytechnic and graduated in 2017, while I was in Oghara Polytechnic, I was working in Zenith Bank as a driver.

“I was the person responsible for the three kidnapping incidents that involved Zenith Bank staff. The first person that we kidnapped was one Daniel. I was the person that monitored him and gave my gang members the location of where he is staying and the type of car that he usually drives. The said Mr Daniel is the Zenith Bank Manager of Urhobo College in Warri and we kidnapped him sometime in the month of October 2020.

“My role was just to provide every needed information about him. I monitored things in office while he was away till the point where I was told by my colleagues in the bank that ransom had been paid. I got N2.5million as my share.

“I could not believe that I made my two years’ salary in one day. So I decided to give them another one. The second was that of Mrs Zowa, the woman is very rich. I monitored her by getting closer and running errands for her.

“I told them exactly when she would get to the spot where she was kidnapped. Just like I predicted, she did not spend up to a week and her family paid. I also got N2.5million as my share.

“I was carried away by greed and decided to give them another one. She is known as Mrs Isioma and is a manager of one of Zenith Bank branches in Delta. I choose her because she is rich but stingy. I got N3.5million as my share. I resigned from the Zenith Bank job in January, 2021 because the money that I collected was enough for me to start up a good business.”

Okpaka said while the three victims were still in their custody, he made sure that no one suspected him. “I was always showing my concern when the news of their kidnap broke. I had money but I would pretend that I am broke so that no one would suspect me. I was not their personal driver but as a bank driver, I know everything about most of the managers of the areas that I cover. They normally send me on personal errands.

“All these happened in October and I waited till January before I resigned. I was shocked when police arrested me through one of the gang members who mentioned my name. I am sorry and beg for mercy.”

Another suspect, Egagah, also from Delta state claimed that he went into crime when he was deported from Dubai. “I got a job in Dubai where I worked in a cargo company as an accountant. Unfortunately, something went wrong and I was deported.

“I have known Okpaka for more than ten years and he used to work in Zenith Bank as a driver. He was the one who came up with the idea to kidnap his former boss. He was still a staff of the bank when he brought the job. He assured us that the man is so rich that he will be able to give us N10million. I called the others and they brought their cars and arms for the operation. The meeting took place in my house. Luckily the man paid more than N10million and my share was N2.5million.

“On the day of my arrest, I was at home when policemen invaded my home and when I tried to run away, they shot me on the leg. It was at the hospital that I got to know the reason for my arrest. I thought they came after us because of fraud which is another business that I do by the side.”

Another suspect, Usobotie, who is also from Delta claimed that he got all the arms from one Emmanuel, claiming that the man was dead.

“I was not part of the gang that kidnapped those bankers. I only helped them to get most of the weapons they used for that operation. I got it from Emmanuel my friend who was a political thug. He was gunned down during one robbery operation at Ughelli and since I knew where he normally hides his arms, I took it and sold it to Egagah. They only gave me N80, 000 and returned it after use.”

Disabled Man Who Sells Weapons To Robbers And Kidnappers In Anambra Confesses

Most of his clients – armed robbers and kidnappers – came from Anambra State to buy their ammunition from him in Calabar.

He may be physically disabled but in matters of crime and criminality, he’s quite able-bodied, hardly allowing his physical disability to restrain him

His name is Christopher Edet Udoh. Before the operatives of Operation Puff Adder recently arrested him in Calabar, Cross River State, he ran a criminal enterprise, selling arms and ammunition to deadly armed robbers and kidnappers. Firearms such as AK-47 rifles, a pump action gun, a locally made gun, double revolvers, ten empty shields of cartridges and nine machine guns were recovered from him, according to the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Mr Monday Bala Kuryas.

Most of his clients – armed robbers and kidnappers – came from Anambra State to buy their ammunition from him in Calabar.

For months, it was gathered, some suspected kidnappers had laid siege to communities in Anambra State, unleashing terror on residents. Recently, the Special Anti-Cultism Squad and the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Anambra State Police Command burst the hideout of the suspected armed robbers and kidnappers at Ngor/Obosi, Nnewi, Ogidi and the state capital, Awka. The operatives made a harvest of arrests, it was learnt. Over 20 suspected members of the cult group, Python and Vickings Confraternity that had kidnapped 10 victims and raped several female victims in their hideout were rounded up.

The police team also rescued six victims and recovered four police AK 47 rifles, pump action, 40 cartridges and other ammunition that had been stolen during the #EndSARS protest last year.

Two of the suspects, who sustained gunshot injuries on their legs, were 25-year-old Chiboy Ezike of Abagana in Njikpke Local Government Area of Anambra State and Chiemere Ajuchukwu, 23.

Besides taking ransoms from victims and raping women, the police boss said the suspects also stole money from their victims’ bank accounts using their ATM cards.

Speaking on the activities of the suspected robbers, Mr Kuryas said the gang had, in November/December 2020, kidnapped and robbed victims along the Awka/Enugu Highway and Onitsha/Owerri Highway before fleeing into the forest after sighting police operatives.

He recalled that in January this year, the same gang had stormed the Nnewi and Ogidi axis. There, they reportedly kidnapped two victims and demanded ransoms in millions of naira. But the anti-kidnapping team had spoilt their fun and rescued the victims.

Said the police boss: “On February 21, 2021, some other members of the same gang, one Blessing Uche Ukogu, 25, Debelt Chukwu Mbanugo, also 25, were arrested in their residential apartments at Oghalubu Okija where police operatives recovered police ammunition, two pump action, and 15 cartridges which were stolen from 3-3 Police Station during the #EndSARS protest.

“The following day, a member of the same gang, Ebuka Obaze, 22, of Ochuche, Umuodo in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, was arrested and the police recovered from him, a cut-to-size locally made double-barrel gun.

“Also, on February 24, the Anti-Cultism Squad raided various hideouts at Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State and arrested members of Python Confraternity who had robbed victims of their valuable items and raped female victims during their initiation at the forest in the Ogidi axis.”

He gave the names of the suspects as Duru David, 22; Ugochukwu Meniru, 20; Nwaoba Chukwudi, 20; Kalu Chukwudi, 18; and Nyala Oputa, 18. He said the police recovered a locally made pistol, magazines, charms and victims’ clothes from the suspects.

The police boss said some other members of the gang arrested include Paul Odukwe, 25, and John Obi, 19, from Ebonyi State. He alleged that they robbed female victims of their possession including telephones and raped them before their arrest along the Igbarian axis. The anti-kidnapping operatives, he said, recovered two pump actions, AK-47 rifles and four mobile phones from them.

“Also on March 2, about 9:30am, at Okpunoeze Unuagu Nnewi, one Ikechukwu Odoh, 25, of Ehamifu in  Isuzo Local Government Area of  Enugu State went into a compound to kidnap  Mary Odeh and her four-month-old baby, Success. The victim the raised alarm and started screaming, which attracted the attention of neighbours. The vigilante group assisted the police detectives and arrested the suspect,” the police boss said.

The victim, Mary Odeh, narrated her experience to SATURDAY SUN: “I was in the compound feeding my baby. I thought the kidnapper came to see somebody, but suddenly, he started dragging me with my baby inside the compound and he started calling the other gang members. I started screaming immediately, which prompted the neighbours to come out. He was arrested but his gang members escaped inside the bush.

CP Kuryas explained that most of the suspects procure their illegal weapons from Christopher Udoh Edet, the physically disabled man, in Calabar.

One of the suspects, Chiboy Ezeike told SATURDAY SUN: “We are a gang of 15 armed robbers and kidnappers. We kidnapped victims from Ogidi, Nnewi, and Awka and took them to our hideout. We collected between ransom of N500,000, N700,000 and N1million from the victims. We kidnapped ladies and raped them before their relatives brought the ransom. We also collected their ATM cards and withdrew money from their bank accounts.

“We were going for an operation at Ogidi and Nnewi in late February when we encountered police detectives. Two of us were arrested while the other gang members escaped.

“We were buying our arms and ammunition from Udoh Edet in Calabar. We were buying them for between N30,000 and N50,000. We have been patronising him for about one year. Sometimes, he rents out guns to us and we would return them after our operation.

Udoh Edet, in an interview with the reporter, said he was making arms to fight enemies of his community. His words: “I hail from Ibiono Local Government Area of Cross River State. I have been into manufacturing of firearms since five years ago. I manufacture arms to fight our enemies, especially in my community. I do manufacture the firearms and hand them over to our youths to fight their enemies. I started selling ammunition to criminals at cheap prices before the police raided my workshop and arrested me. They also collected the ammunition, they found in my workshop.”

One of the victims, Mr. Chika Emeka said: “I came to identify the kidnappers who abducted me. I was in their custody for two days. They demanded N2 million ransom. I was kidnapped at Nnewi before the police detectives came and rescued me from the kidnappers’ den. I was able to identify them. I thank the anti-kidnapping personnel for their prompt response. I didn’t pay any money to them. They bound me in my hands and legs and beat me into a state of coma.”

CP Kuryas said the command under his watch would continue to work assiduously until the crime rate in the state is reduced to the barest minimum.

“We need the cooperation of the public who are expected to report suspicious movements. The suspects would soon be charged to court,” the Anambra police boss said.

The insurgents also killed five people, destroyed houses and other property and made away with residents' belongings, a source said.

According to a report by Daily Post, an unspecified number of women have been abducted by suspected Boko Haram sect members who attacked a community in Adamawa State.

The insurgents also killed five people, destroyed houses and other property and made away with residents' belongings, a source said.

It was gathered on Saturday morning that the insurgents stormed Kwapre, a village in the Hong Local Government Area of Northern Adamawa on Friday evening, shooting randomly and picking up the women.

A source around the area, Innocent Geoffrey, told  DAILY POST that the attackers were first thought to be herders out for vengeance attack but later manifested their Boko Haram tendency, seizing the female residents they could lay their hands on, as residents scampered for safety.

"Right now, there is no single person in Kwapre; everybody has fled the community," Innocent said during the conversation Saturday morning.

The member representing Gombi/ Hong Federal Constituency and Chairman, Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Yusuf Buba Yakubu, who represents the affected community in the National Assembly, reacted to the development with a statement expressing his concerns.

He said the insurgents, who besieged Kwapre village in Garaha Ward of Hong LGA, killed and maimed unsuspecting community dwellers, destroyed homes and property and abducted some people.

"This latest attack on the innocent and peace-loving people of Kwapre is another senseless and cruel act of cowardice on a community that is renowned for peace, industry and serenity,"
the lawmaker said.

Hunger Will Kill Me, Daughter, Grandma If I Don't Hawk In Lagos Traffic – 26-Year-Old Single Mother Amputated At 11 Speaks

Being an orphan and walking with one leg supported by a crutch is not enough for the 26-year-old to compromise her values.

Mary Daniel, a young Nigerian woman who is buoyed by the resolve to stave off hunger and live on her own sweat, finds infinite strength in her frailties.

Being an orphan and walking with one leg supported by a crutch is not enough for the 26-year-old to compromise her values. Come what may, she has vowed not to beg on the streets since fate dealt her a huge blow at 11.

That unflinching resolution makes her eke out a living on the highways in Oshodi, one of Lagos’ busiest cities, hawking bottled water in terrible traffic to cater to herself, her two-year-old child and aged grandmother.

It was 2.30pm on Friday when our correspondent arrived at a complex on Suwebatu Street, Oshodi, where she buys bottled water on credit and pays after sales.

About 5 pm, she wobbled on her crutch into the complex with an empty black bowl dangling on her left hand. The single mother had just returned from another round of strenuous peddling; a fourth in the day.

Encounter with fate at 11

Growing up in Katsina State where she lived with her parents, Daniel nursed dreams of a regular child. She wanted to have formal education and aspired to a great future. She was in Primary four when her beautiful hopes were dashed in December 2006 on the highway.

That fateful day, she and her parents were travelling to their country home in Ayingba, Kogi State, for Yuletide, when they were involved in a fatal accident.

Her parents and some others died in the crash that crushed her right leg. That was all she could remember until days later when she was left with a leg.

“I was just 11-year-old then so I couldn’t really remember everything that happened,” Daniel said bleakly as she narrated her plight to our correspondent inside the complex in Oshodi. “My leg was shattered and it had to be amputated. Doctors said I would die if it was not cut,” she remarked grimly, adjusting her position on a bench she sat on.

She added, “My siblings didn’t travel with us that year. My younger brother, Godwin, is now living with my aunt in the village while my elder sister, Esther, lives in Abuja. She’s married but living from hand to mouth.”

Months after her leg healed, Daniel reawakened her dying dreams. She relocated to the village and returned to school. But just when she thought she was on the right track to success, another bombshell dropped.

“I dropped out at JSS 3,” she mumbled. “I was going to school on a government scholarship but they stopped paying my fees. That was 2014.”

Thereon, she sought solace in hawking, moving from Anambra to Delta and then Lagos.

She recounted, “I relocated to Onitsha (Anambra State) and started selling sachet water. I use the gains I make to feed myself and send some money to my grandmother in the village. She is over 70 years old and I don’t want hunger to kill her.

“In 2018, grandma told me a man in the village wanted to marry me and she asked me to come home. While we were dating, I got pregnant but he denied being responsible for the pregnancy.

“Out of shame, I relocated to Asaba (Delta State) and continued hawking sachet water. I squatted with a woman from our village for some months before I rented an apartment.

“A car brushed my arm while I was hawking in traffic. I was heavily pregnant then. One man saw me bleeding and gave me N100,000. I used the money to rent a small apartment and bought some baby things. I gave birth in 2019.”

She only had a two-week ‘maternity leave’ before she returned to the streets, manoeuvring the traffic to sell water with her baby strapped to the back.

She continued, “I decided to come to Lagos about two weeks ago because I was not selling well in Asaba. I sold my home appliances to raise the fare. My daughter is with the woman I lived with in Asaba. She is now in Ayingba with my baby. My grandma didn’t know I am now in Lagos. Last week, I sent N8,000 to my grandma and I want to send N10,000 to her again this week. I am the only one taking care of her.

“I met with a woman selling noodles and I explained my plight to her. She linked me up with one Alhaja from whom I buy packs of bottled water. I buy a pack for N600 and make N240 gain. I sell six to eight packs per day and make a profit of N1,000 to N1,500. I save N500 daily. I want to send the money for the upkeep of my daughter at the end of the month.”

Bottled water not paid for in traffic

Twice, passengers had gone with her money while waiting for them to pay after giving them water.

“The first time was on Wednesday and today (Friday). The vehicles they were in moved when the traffic eased off and I couldn’t run after them to collect my money,” she added.

Daniel also takes a fair slice of the risks that come with street trading. Tactful navigation around gridlock is an art any regular trader must learn in traffic to avert deadly hazards. And Daniel has learnt to be more adept at it given her vulnerable condition.

“I hawk in traffic around Terminal 1, Bolade and markets around Oshodi,” she disclosed. “I wait for traffic to be standstill and dash to the road to sell to commuters. I will retreat to the roadside once the traffic eases off and returns immediately there is another standstill. It is stressful but I use drugs in the evening to kill pains.”

Passing the nights on the balcony

Even night is not a comforter for Daniel after an onerous task in the day. She sleeps outside under the cold and grating sound of mosquitoes feasting on her.

“I sleep on the balcony and passage of a house over there,” she said, pointing at a storey building on Suwebatu Street. “I hardly sleep at night because of mosquitoes,” she lamented, before breaking down in tears. “So I usually pray at night,” she added after a long pause.

Daniel said she always takes a short nap after the first round of hawking in the morning to make up for the sleepless night.

Why I hate begging

Despite being an orphan and physically challenged, Daniel is not bogged by her adversities. “I don’t like begging because I believe I have the strength to work and cater for myself,” she declared. “I know I am not lazy and I took the decision not to beg. Some who are begging don’t even make as much as I do daily. Some people, out of pity, will gift me N1,000 or N2,000 after buying water from me.”

She added, “I wish to have a shop of my own so that I can have a better means to take care of my daughter and grandma. I used to have one artificial leg but it was painful whenever I wore it. So I decided to be using a crutch.”

We’re amazed at Daniel’s hard work – Traders, resident

A drink seller, Alhaja Bolanle Gafar, from whom Daniel collects bottled water daily, told Saturday PUNCH that she initially turned down the single mother’s request when she approached her.

She explained, “I saw her about two weeks ago on the street. The next day, a neighbour brought her to me. She said she would be buying bottled water from me to hawk. I was surprised because even people who are not physically challenged always complain that hawking is stressful. I initially turned her down but she insisted that I should sell to her.

“I gave her one pack but she requested more. I declined but she insisted I added one more pack. She wanted me to add a bag of sachet water but I completely refused. I kept wondering till she came back after selling everything. She paid and went with another two packs. She did six rounds that day. At times, she does seven or eight.

“Whenever I tell her to slow down, she will say she needs to hustle. She goes far distances to hawk.”

Another trader, Mrs Amudalat Oyinkansola, said she was amazed at Daniel’s confidence and her determination to succeed.

She stated, “About two weeks ago, she entered the complex one evening and greeted me. She narrated her situation to me and I felt really bad. I was amazed at her confidence. She said she is grateful she is still alive and that she will prosper one day. She said she wanted to be hawking bottled water and I told her to come the next day. I introduced her to Alhaja.”

A noodle seller who Daniel first met with in Lagos, Mrs Adeleke Olowoora, said she offered her a stand to display her wares but she insisted on hawking to drive sales.

Olowoora explained, “She came to my stand with a bag around 5pm and sat by me. She bought noodles. When she finished eating, she told me she came to settle in Lagos but she had nowhere to sleep.

“When I was going home, I begged a man, Mr Felix, to help me look for somewhere she could sleep. I wanted to take her home but I was afraid. She has been sleeping on the balcony of the man’s rented apartment on Suwebatu Street. Mosquitoes are disturbing her but I told her to endure.”

The resident, Felix Aku, said on Daniel’s first day in the neighbourhood, he wanted to take her to a makeshift structure where people pay a token every day to pass the night.

He said, “It was already late and I was afraid to allow her sleep in my apartment. I eventually allowed her in. Many of us sleep in my apartment. So, she said she would be sleeping on the balcony. My landlady saw her and she allowed her to be sleeping on the balcony.”

Stop Using Feminism To Justify Wickedness – Chimamanda Tells Nigerian Feminists

Chimamanda in a viral video interview warned Nigerian feminists to stop using feminism to justify their wickedness.

 Chimamanda Adichie

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the award-winning Nigerian author, has taken a swipe at Nigerian feminists.

Chimamanda in a viral video interview warned Nigerian feminists to stop using feminism to justify their wickedness.

According to her, some young Nigerian ladies in the name of feminism sound really mean and ‘nasty’ which is not the aim of feminism.

Chimamanda said: “I say to young Nigerian feminists – please do not use feminism to justify your wickedness.

“Sometimes, I see some of these young ladies and when talking to them, they sound really mean, and I say to them this isn’t feminism; you’re just being nasty.”

Feminism in the world today aims to combat gender inequality and oppression of women in the society.

It is not a good time for the family of a 19-year-old boy killed by a drunk policeman as they are currently fighting over who should receive his compensation money.

It was gathered that late Friday Arunsi was killed by a drunk police officer last year, at Ebem community, in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

The family has been torn apart over who gets the compensation over the death of their son from the State panel of inquiry on police brutality and extra-judicial killing, (EndSars).

Tribune Online gathered that the late Friday Arunsi was on April 17, 2020, shot dead by a  police officer attached to the Ebem police station, Ohafia under the influence of alcohol.

The deceased’s father, Mr Ifeanyi Arunsi and the deceased’s maternal family, Umu Nneibo maternal family, at the resumed hearing on the matter, disagreed before the panel over who would receive the expected compensation fine for the deceased if granted.

Arunsi claimed that the maternal home’s representative, Mr Kings Hart Ukpai, never contributed anything to the training of the deceased from birth as he only got to know late Friday, January 2017.

“My son was 19 years old when he was killed by the police. Mr Kings Hart Ukpai contributed nothing even from birth. I have been the one training him from primary school until he sat for his WAEC.

January 2017 was the first time Mr Kings Hart Ukpai knew my son. My son was buried in Ebem Ohafia, on a piece of land I borrowed N5M to buy. The Umu Nneibo maternal family did not play any role in his training and burial.

They were cautioned by the council of chiefs and elders whom I reported the matter to when they pushed me to the wall. At the burial, over N1 million was realized. Mr Kings Hart Ukpai took everything. They didn’t give me anything,” he said.

Chairman of the panel, Justice Sunday Imo, rtd, urged the two parties to stop quarrelling and concentrate on the extrajudicial killing of their son. He further warned that the families cannot be certain that compensation would be recommended for the deceased. Justice Imo adjourned the trial till April 7, for defence.

Nigerians WIthout NIN Risk 14 Years Imprisonment - Minister

Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami has issued a warning to Nigerians without NIN.

Nigeria's minister of Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami has warned those without the National Identification Number of the risks involved.

According to him, Nigerians who do not have NIN risk 14 years imprisonment.

He said this at the weekly Presidential Media briefing organized by the Presidential Communication Media Team in Abuja on Thursday.

According to him, 51 million Nigerians have enrolled for the National Identification Number as of March 31, 2021.

While encouraging Nigerians to enrol for NIN, the minister warned that “those yet to obtain the NIN risk seven or 14 years imprisonment” as stipulated by the Nigerian Constitution.

He explained that while obtaining a SIM card may be optional, NIN is mandatory, noting that a lot of transactions in the country are not supposed to be carried out without NIN.

He added, “Based on the requirement by law each and every citizen and legal resident must obtain his/her National Identification Number, which is being coordinated by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). It’s a requirement by law but many citizens ignore it.

“What we achieved in the area of enrolment from the time Mr President has directed me to supervise NIMC till date is unprecedented and we would continue to ensure that in the next few years we have an almost a complete data base of all our citizens in the country.

“No country will be successful in education, health, budget planning or national planning without data base of its citizens in place.

“What I inherited in the database was less than 20 per cent of our population. But we want to ensure that before we leave office we would look at the database and be proud of our country.”
